My favorite 'Diet' Book

Don't judge a book by it's cover. 20 years ago, I read a book that changed me and I need to remind myself of it's message. I guess it is because I have always struggled with mindless eating. Also, I don't eat for long periods of time and then inhale everything so fast I can barely taste it. I never sit down and I don't value food like I should. I found this book in the bargain book section and it looked like a joke. It appeared to be wrapped in cellophane and had a charature of a lady wearing a dress that you wanted to touch, like one of those baby books. It was all velvety. I had to pick it up. When I started reading it I found it to be very tongue-in-cheek, but so incredibly smart and full of useful tips. The name of the book was The Martini Diet, by Jennifer Sander.
It talked about how us Americans don't savor our food enough. It is not a special occasion like other countries. Every meal in other countries is set aside and made time for. Even coffee time. She compared Starbucks cups to toddler sippy-cups. She said we should take time to sit and enjoy our coffee. She suggested every time we eat, we should put it on a plate. Never eat out of a bag. And sit down! We should never eat or drink in a car. We should even go as far as to light a candle and make it special. She talked about portion size and indulging in flavorful foods like the french. There were so many great ideas in there but, mostly it reminded me how we look at food in America. I remember wishing things would slow down one day. We rush so much. Well, at least I do. I hope one of the things we can gain from the pandemic is to appreciate our meal times and make every time we eat a special occasion. We are worth it! ...Don't judge a book by it's cover. This is a gem!!!
